The procedure is performed under general anesthetic. A small incision is made at the top of your leg, at the groin, and another made at the ankle. The blood supply to the varicose vein gets blocked, then a fine wire is inserted through the length of the vein. The wire is secured to the vein and then pulled back out. Removing the wire will also remove the vein it’s secured to, stripping it from your leg. Smaller incisions may be made along the leg, stripping smaller veins also, if necessary. After surgery, other veins in the legs will take over the work of the veins that are removed.

 

For smaller veins, several tiny cuts are made in the skin through which the varicose vein is removed. Stitches usually are not required. It is not uncommon for Dr Omotoso to remove both big and smaller veins at the same time.

 

After vein stripping and ligation, patients are usually sent home the same day. A family member or friend will need to be available for transportation after the surgery and should remain with you for a period of 24 hours in case of complications immediately after.

 

You may experience burning and tingling after the surgery. If numbness and discolorations are noted to unaffected areas after the procedure, it is important to call our office at (506) 648-7013 during office hours or emergency. For general discomfort, mild painkillers, such as ibuprofen are usually prescribed or recommended.

 

You will more than likely come home with dressings after the surgery. You may usually resume driving 48 hours after surgery and return to normal activities like work after 2 weeks. You can expect a recovery time of up to four weeks
